Our School's Academic Strengths Teaching The Individual At St. Christopher, we make every effort to address the needs of each child by recognizing individual differences in children's learning styles and ability levels. To help meet these needs, we employ the services of a speech and hearing therapist, a remedial reading teacher, a tutor, a guidance counselor, and a school psychologist. Classroom teachers work closely with these professionals and with parents to help ensure the success of each child. We also offer an after school peer tutoring program. St. Christopher also provides a well established honors program that challenges and stretches the minds of our higher achieving students. Students in grades six through eight can qualify for SPARK, which is St. Chris' accelerated reading class and MATCH, the accelerated math program. Enrichment opportunities are also offered to students at various grade levels. Technology At St. Christopher School we recognize the need to prepare our students for the challenges of the twenty-first century. The rapidly changing world of technology will certainly be one of those challenges. We work hard to stay abreast of new innovations in technology. Upgrading the computer lab equipment and staying in touch with the latest developments in software and the information highway are high priorities here at St. Chris. The integration of technology into the curriculum, computer in-service for our staff, and the opportunities for students to use computers in a lab environment as well as laptops in a classroom setting, are part of the ongoing efforts we make to enhance the education program. Art Program Art Education at St. Christopher is both rich and enriching. Our students have the opportunity to explore art through a wide variety of mediums. A walk through our halls on any given day is a testimonial to the creativity of our young artists. St. Christopher participates in the annual Creative Spirit Art Show at the University of Dayton Arena. We are also fortunate that Children’s Medical Center has purchased many pieces of artwork from our students and displayed them throughout their medical center. Music Program Music Education offers our students the opportunity to explore music of different time periods and cultures. Through the use of the Orff System students explore rhythm and learn to create music and a variety of percussion instruments. Their musical talent is brought to life in the Christmas and Spring Musicals. St. Christopher students also have the opportunity to perform at the annual Choral Adjudication at the University of Dayton. Physical Education Program St. Chris’ Physical Education Program blends physical fitness, team and recreational sports, and movement into a well-rounded experience. Our students have the opportunity to participate in Presidential Physical Fitness program and the Dayton Elementary School Fitness Challenge. Educational Enrichment Programs In addition to these fine programs we bring a wide variety of speakers, performers, authors and poets to the school. Student field trips to Victoria Theater, the Dayton Philharmonic, Cincinnati Zoo, Young’s Dairy Farm, Aullwood Nature Center, Carriage Hill Farm, Dayton International Airport, Carillon Park, COSI, Woodland Alters, Natural History Museum, and many more expand the walls of our classrooms to include a wealth of cultural and natural wonders for our students to explore. Extra Curricular Activities
Community Service As an educational program rooted in the Gospel, we strive to connect our students with the reality and need of the broader community. Agencies that we have networked with include Catholic Social Services, St. Vincent Hotel, Ronald McDonald House, Womanline, Appalachian Catholic Relief Holiday Aid, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Vandalia Park Nursing Home, Operation Rice Bowl and the House of Bread.
